Elliot Page Links Shingles Onset to Stress from Feeling ‘Out of Place’ During Inception Filming

Guess what? It’s not a figment of your imagination! Elliot Page, the talented actor, recently shared a surprising revelation. During the filming of the famous movie Inception in 2010, he actually developed shingles due to the tremendous stress he was under about his gender identity and sexuality. In his newly released memoir called Pageboy, he opens up about the negative impact that working on this iconic film had on his health. So, what exactly happened? Well, Page discloses that the shingles appeared on his spine while he was just twenty-two years old, an experience that left him feeling quite bewildered. He explains that being surrounded by cisgender male co-stars made him question his own place in the film. Despite finding his fellow actors, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tom Hardy, and Cillian Murphy, delightful to work with, Page still couldn’t shake the feeling of being out of sync. In fact, during the first two weeks of filming, he even joked that he would be replaced by Keira Knightley. It seems that his body had a way of communicating the stress that his words couldn’t express. Fast forward a few years, and Page eventually mustered up the courage to publicly come out as gay during a speech at a Human Rights Campaign conference. But he didn’t stop there. In December 2020, he took another big step by coming out as transgender. If you’re hungry for more entertainment news, sign up for Entertainment Weekly’s free daily newsletter.
