Nicholas Galitzine, star of Red, White & Royal Blue, with cake remnants behind his ears the day after wedding scene

The phrase “Let them eat cake!” has long been associated with the monarchy, but in the movie Red, White & Royal Blue, actor Nicholas Galitzine took it quite literally. In the opening scene of the film, Galitzine’s character, Prince Henry, and Taylor Zakhar Perez’s character, Alex, the First Son of the United States, find themselves in a sticky situation after a quarrel causes them to crash into and demolish a wedding cake. As a result, they end up completely covered in cake and frosting. Surprisingly, Galitzine didn’t mind this messy predicament. In an interview with EW, he revealed, “Throughout the day, you would get quite hungry. So the fact that you could just snack on the cake peeling off your body was super convenient.” The chaos escalated when the crew decided to turn the scene into a food fight. Galitzine explains, “Many of the crew members were eager to join in the fun and throw cake at us, even though we were already covered. It was an enjoyable experience working in the realm of physical comedy, with all the silliness of cake on our suits, using whiskey to clean them, and having more cake come raining down on us.” Fortunately, once filming wrapped, Galitzine could quickly clean up in the shower upstairs in the English estate where they were shooting. However, he couldn’t fully escape the remnants of the cake. “Even that evening and the next morning, I would find bits of icing in my ears or behind them,” he revealed. “It was a constant reminder of the cake, although I didn’t indulge in eating those bits.” Based on the novel by Casey McQuiston, Red, White & Royal Blue will be available on Prime Video on August 11th. The film follows the secret romance between Prince Henry and Alex, as they are forced to pretend to be friends, leading them to discover an unexpected connection. Writer-director Matthew López shared, “When I first read the book in early 2020, I knew by page 100 that I wanted to turn it into a movie. I fell in love with the characters and was eager to bring them to life on-screen. I was also excited about the opportunity to film scenes set in the world of the presidency and the British Royal Family. I persistently persuaded producers Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schecter to support me in directing the film, as I couldn’t bear the thought of someone else making it.” If you’re craving more movie news, make sure to sign up for Entertainment Weekly’s free newsletter for the latest trailers, celebrity interviews, film reviews, and more.
