Stephen Amell of Arrow Joins SAG-AFTRA Picket Line Following Controversial Strike Remarks

Stephen Amell, best known for his role in Arrow, faced criticism from some supporters of the SAG-AFTRA strike when he publicly expressed his disagreement with the work stoppage. However, last Friday, around a week and a half after retracting his anti-strike comments, Amell demonstrated his support by joining a picket line alongside his fellow union members. He was photographed in front of the Warner Bros. Discovery offices in New York, holding a strike sign and wearing a T-shirt that said “SAG-AFTRA Strong.” This decision came about two weeks after Amell received backlash for stating at a fan convention in North Carolina that he backed his union but did not support striking. He further explained his position, expressing his frustration with the strike as a negotiating tactic. Despite his initial remarks, Amell clarified his true stance on social media, emphasizing that he stands with his union and understands the necessity of striking. He admitted his disappointment at the impact on promoting his Starz series, Heels, but affirmed his commitment to standing with his union. Amell’s Arrow colleagues also showed support by reuniting outside the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, California. Among them were Caity Lotz, Willa Holland, Katrina Law, Juliana Harkavy, Kirk Acevedo, and Katie Cassidy. They shared a group photo on Instagram, joined by writers and producers Marc Guggenheim, Beth Schwartz, and Wendy Mericle. Guggenheim, a former Arrow showrunner, clarified that Amell’s comments were misinterpreted, emphasizing his unwavering support for both SAG and WGA. Although Amell was unable to join them, he reached out to Guggenheim, Schwartz, and Mericle with an encouraging text, and they reciprocated his support.
